I am committed to providing a safe and ethical psychotherapy service and to responding appropriately where there are concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child or adult at risk.
I work therapeutically with adults only. However, safeguarding concerns relating to children or other adults may arise through information shared during therapy.
My responsibilities
As a sole practitioner, I am responsible for safeguarding within my practice. I undertake regular safeguarding training relating to both children and adults and work in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
Where a safeguarding concern arises, I will consider the nature and level of risk and take appropriate action. Where possible and safe to do so, I will discuss my concerns and any proposed action with the client.
Depending on the circumstances, I may seek advice or consultation from my clinical supervisor, BACP, my professional insurer or the relevant safeguarding service.
Sharing information
Confidentiality is an important part of psychotherapy, but it is not absolute. Information may be shared where this is necessary to protect a child or adult at risk from serious harm, or where I am otherwise required or permitted to do so by law.
Any decision to share information will be considered carefully and only information that is relevant and necessary will be disclosed. The reasons for safeguarding decisions and any action taken will be recorded appropriately.
Reporting safeguarding concerns
Where appropriate, safeguarding concerns will be referred to the relevant local authority safeguarding service. For clients living in County Durham, this will normally be through Durham County Council's safeguarding procedures.
If I believe that someone is in immediate danger or requires urgent assistance, I will contact the emergency services by calling 999.
Concerns about my practice
If you have a safeguarding concern relating to my practice or the service you have received, I encourage you to raise this with me where you feel able to do so. As a registered member of the BACP, my practice is also subject to BACP's Professional Conduct Procedure. Information about raising a concern or making a complaint about a BACP member is available on the BACP website.
